The displays track the tastes and fashions from the 1600s to the modern day. The range of 14 houses accommodated up to 56 pensioners, and was fronted by a garden, with to the north the small ironmongers' graveyard. The museum (named after sir robert geffrye, mayor of london around 1685) used to provide homes for fifty poor pensioners in the 18th and 19th century, before converting into a museum in 1914. Knot gardens are arranged in a square frame with a formal symmetrical design.
